Stairs FAQs

Are floating stairs considered safe?

Yes, floating stairs are safe. You shouldn’t feel that they’re less safe than a traditional staircase. Builders must comply with code requirements (we encourage you to check your local code for state requirements), but as long as they’re built accordingly, your floating staircase is solid.

What types of floating stairs?

There are several options - straight stairs, L-shaped stairs, U-shaped stairs, winder stairs, spiral stairs, curved stairs, and cantilevered Stairs. It’s dependent on your space and design.

What kind of code should I expect for floating stairs?

Check your local code, but in most cases gaps are as follows -   4 inches between treads which is not enough space to slip through the opening. Each tread must be strong enough to support 300 pounds of concentrated force.

How expensive are floating stairs?

Floating stairs can cost between $15,000-$100,000 depending on your choices which includes stringers, treads and railings. We find that on average, $20,000-$30,000 is the common price clients pay but if you’re looking for a really elevated design or fine finishings, pricing can change dramatically.

How much does it cost to replace stair rails?

Prices vary anywhere between  $10 to $500 per linear foot for a new railing - and that includes fabrication, not installation. If you’re choosing less expensive materials then it will fall on the lower end - $10 and $60 is more reasonable. If you’re choosing highly durable options - expect to pay more than $100. When pricing balusters, expected $3 and $17 per piece not including installation.

Can stair rails be replaced?

Switching out your stair balustrade - which includes handrails, base rails, spindles and newel posts - doesn't always need to be difficult. You can approach it as a DIY project if you are used to working with wood. Depending on how stairs are fit, you may be able to do it yourself but it varies depending on complications.

What is the difference between a banister and a handrail?

The structure is different. A banister is a handrail supported by balusters, whereas a handrail is typically mounted to the wall.

What does it cost to replace stair treads?

You’ll like pay per stair and you can expect to pay $100 or more for each tread and riser installed. Expect to pay more than $1,000 for a typical staircase. Some contractors charge per hour so expect additional fees.

Can you put new stair treads over old treads?

If you’re  considering placing a new stair tread on top of an old one, it has to be measured and cut to fit and then glued.
